A Cherokee View of Leadership

Leading From Your Own Medicine: A Cherokee View of Leadership by Mark D Parman offers a transformative take on leadership rooted in over 2,000 years of Cherokee history. Drawing from Indigenous values of balance, reciprocity, and respect for all life, Mark presents a leadership model that contrasts modern paradigms by emphasizing relationships, harmony, and collective well-being.

Grounded in Cherokee tradition, the book highlights how these ancient principles remain relevant and offer universal wisdom. Mark's reflections on leadership are drawn from years of experience as a leader within the Cherokee Nation and as a voice in the global conversation on Indigenous wisdom. He provides strategies for leaders to engage with integrity and responsibility, bridging cultural divides and fostering collaboration and healing. This book invites readers to view leadership as a deeply relational and spiritual practice, offering a path forward for today’s challenges.

Hello everyone and welcome.

From the appearing way Merciful Creator,

Thank you for the Sun which purifies.

It brings light into the world,

Enlightenment into the darkness,

And understanding to the ignorant.

Help us to be the bearers of your light.

I believe that leadership is a way of moving through the world, a way of being, and finding a way, every day, to help someone else.

Leaders lead because other people decide to follow them. Unless at least one person makes the decision to follow you, it does not matter what title you or someone else gives you, you are not a leader.

Even if you currently have many followers, the question how to become a more effective leader then becomes, “Why would someone decide to follow me?”

My name is Mark Parman, I am a citizen of the Cherokee Nation and I am here to walk the Cherokee Medicine Wheel with you on a journey where you will discover the answer to this question and others.

In my soon to be released book, Leading From Your Own Medicine, A Cherokee View of Leadership, I offer thoughts, ideas, and stories that can help you become the leader you are destined to be.

I will also be offering online learning experiences here on this site based on the material from the book.

From the way of the warm Creator of life,

Thank you for the times of growth which we experience.

Thank you for nurturing us and helping us grow,

For blessing us and enabling us to be a blessing to others.

"I am DiDaNiDoHi, the one guides and holds.

I know the way.

Will you come with me? Let us begin your journey."

From the disappearing way Father of our ancestors,

Thank you for the stories, the experiences,

The stories of your faithfulness to your people.

Grant us the ears to listen and to hear you,

And the wisdom to live accordingly.

In our most ancient stories, we are reminded that there was a time when animals spoke and people would listen. Teachers like SaSa, the Great Goose, and TaTsuHwa, the Little Cardinal, will aid you along the way.

We will visit places of calm, rest, healing, struggle, confusion, and uncertainty. AWiINaGeEHi, Deer, will give you guidance on how to proceed on your journey.

From the way of the cold Great Creator,

Thank you for the cold, the snow that winter brings.

It brings purity to the earth and renews your creation.

Thank you for the seasons of winter in our lives.

It is our facing of such trials that allows us to renew our lives.

Grant us the strength to endure.
